Messages from Your RMT

Why does it seem like THIS March is only 5 or 6 months away from LAST March? It can't be 12 months! Be that as it may, it is so much fun to hook up with our sisters-in-harmony again.

As was previously announced, several of our long-time Regional Management Team members are retiring. Cathy Lee (Communications Coordinator) has served the region for the past 5 years in several capacities. Linda Wong is retiring as Finance Coordinator after 6 years in that position. And Monica Tautkus is turning the reins over to a new Director’s Coordinator after 3 years. Thank you, ladies, for all you have done to keep our region running smoothly!

While we say “goodbye” to a few faces, several familiar faces will be joining the RMT this year.  Mary Ashford (Directors’ Coordinator) will be serving for the first time on the RMT – welcome! Everyone knows Mary as that wacky bass of Shimmer! and director of South Valley Sound Chorus. Erin Lunn (Communications) and Marcia Bosma (Finance) should be familiar to everyone – both previously served on the RMT in other capacities. Erin is co-director of Voices Unlimited, and Marcia is a member of Verdugo Hills and Harborlites. Welcome back to both of you!

Cathy Tautkus has also been selected to serve her second 2-year term as Team Coordinator, while Linda Kelly, Lisa Miller, Jolene Forzetting, and Debbie Curtis are continuing on the Team for another year.

We trust this year has been jam packed full of wonderful learning and success experiences for each SAI member in our fabulous Region 11, and that this contest is full of JOY as you have yet another opportunity to show us all what you've been working on this year! What a privilege it is to share this fabulous hobby of ours!

Cathy Lee This is my final article for the News@11 and as such I want to say what a privilege it has been to work for such a fine organization. I’m sure the International organization is wonderful but I am specifically talking about the women within our wonderful region who work so hard. I would encourage anyone who is looking for an opportunity to network and mentor to look to our Regional Management Team. We are uniquely blessed with some amazing women. Good luck to our new Regional Management Team as they continue their work in our organization. Much love and respect. – Cathy

Monica Tautkus It is with mixed emotions that I leave the RMT and the position of Director's Coordinator for our wonderful Region 11. I have LOVED being your Directors’ Coordinator and having the opportunity to do my small part to help our talented musical directors be the best they can be! Thanks to the TCs/Presidents who I have had the pleasure to work with to bring about surprises for their beloved Directors.

To each of our amazing Directors – I respect you all so much, and thank you for all you have taught me in the past 3 (or 30+) years. I loved representing you!

My undying respect and gratitude goes to the women who have served on my team over the past 3 years and who have worked tirelessly to make their programs succeed for all of us!  Hugs and thanks to S.T.A.R. Coordinator Wendy Franklin, Spotlight Chair Mary Ashford, and Patti Goin our DCP Coordinator!

I want to thank all the dedicated women who have sat at the RMT table with me the last 3 years and put up with all my hair-brain schemes – I could not have accomplished anything without your help and support. "It takes a village"! – Monica

Linda Kelly Now, as we are planning our summer vacations and activities, I want to remind you of our Summer Sizzler, which is July 10-12 this year! The one-and-only Diane Porsch will be our International Guest Faculty. You can bet you'll love every minute of her classes. She's an amazing teacher in all areas of our art form. In addition, we will be having our Novice Quartet Contest on Friday night. That is always a treat.

And while I have your attention, you might as well plug in the Fall Festival date of October 2-4 with none other than Carole Kirkpatrick! What awesome educational opportunities we have scheduled this year in Region 11! Hope to see you all at both events. You will love every minute!! – Linda

Jolene Forzetting I want to give a special thank you to Dottie Henshaw, who has served as CRC for many years. Dottie has done a phenomenal job and it is with great regret that we will say goodbye to Dottie as CRC following this year’s contest. Additionally, I wish to thank the entire Convention Committee for all of the hard work they do to make this weekend run seamlessly. We will be saying goodbye to a few members of the committee that have served for several years, and we will be looking forward to working with new faces in the coming year.

I am pleased to announce that Pat Vincent will be stepping into the role of CRC for 2010. Pat has previously served on the RCSC as the publications chair, as well as having served as the Region’s webmaster, and will be an excellent addition as CRC.

A big thank you goes out to Linda Wong, who has served as our Regional Sites Coordinator.  You have done such a good job negotiating contracts and working with the hotels and convention center over the years, and I appreciate all you have done for the region.

Tina Rowley, our Competition Coordinator, always makes our contests the best they can be for our competitors. Tina’s focus is always on “what's best for the competitor,” and we all appreciate her efforts and hard work. Thank you!

I would like to acknowledge Bea Knaapen, CRS, who works tirelessly throughout the year to coordinate the RSSC, fill committee spots, and keep communications open, even when we did not have a fall seminar in 2008. I am looking forward to an eventful and educational year with Bea at the helm of the Seminars Committee! I really appreciate you!

My wish is for every competitor to have a rewarding and memorable time on stage this weekend! – Jolene

Linda Wong
Finance Coordinator
Voices Unlimited
lmwong@bak.rr.com

Linda Wong I will be terming out as Finance Coordinator on April 30, 2009, having served the region in this capacity for the last 6 years. Some of the accomplishments that I am particularly proud of during my tenure have included setting into motion our Regional Funding Guidelines, developing our very successful Treasurer’s Round-up meetings at each seminar, developing our Grants Advisor position, and containing costs in our ever increasing dicey financial world.  These accomplishments were with the assistance of the hardworking members of the RMT, RSSC and RCSC who provide the best in seminars and convention for the members of our region. I have learned and enjoyed working with the various committees, the RMT and with my Finance Team members; Cindy McBurney, Regional Sales Chair, Nan Waltman, Grants Advisor and Marcia Bosma, YWIH Fund Chair…I thank you all for your support and assistance!  I would also like to thank and recognize all of the regional chorus treasurers…what would we do without you!

I congratulate the RMT appointment of Marcia Bosma to this position, who else better than a math teacher!  I will always be on hand to assist and support her in the transition process.– Linda

Debbie Curtis
Marketing Coordinator
Channelaire / Harborlites

Debbie Curtis The year 2009 is only about 3 months old, and already we’ve lost several Sweet Adeline icons – Jackie Hall, Janet Ashford and most recently, Joni Bescos. It’s been a difficult start to the year. But now it’s contest time and time to renew friendships and share the music we love to sing.

I hope you have all been enjoying the monthly Marketing Minute. Unlike News@11, which only comes out 3 times a year, the Marketing Minute is a great way to get important regional information to you quickly.  If you have suggestions for future articles – or need to be added to the mailing list because you have no idea what I’m referring to! – just let me know!

The RMT will be doing our annual Strategic Planning weekend in May, and I’m hoping to secure budget money for several new projects I’m planning for the region. Stay tuned for more information!!

Enjoy the weekend, everyone! It’s going to be a hot time in Bakersfield!! – Debbie

Cathy Tautkus This past year has been filled with so much, everything from wonderful achievements (two quartets and two choruses competing at International) to moments that have broken our hearts with the passing of loved ones and friends. This is definitely a time to think about all that we have and are thankful for in our lives.

I, for one, would like to thank those women that take time from their busy lives to volunteer for our region. I am constantly amazed at the tremendous work done by our Competition and Seminar committees. The sheer amount of work and coordination that goes into running these events is considerable and these committees do their jobs so well.

I’d also like to recognize and thank those who volunteer on my team. Debi Bitterolf is secretary for the RMT. Recording meeting minutes and keeping track of the RMT email correspondence is quite a challenge and Debi meets that challenge every time.

Thelma Atmore (By-Laws & Standing Rules) is your contact for any questions or assistance with your chorus’ By-Laws or Standing Rules.

Donna Ewy (Insurance) ensures that we have all the required coverage to properly insure our region at convention and various seminars/activities.

Kathy Spier (Young Singers Foundation (YSF) Liaison) is the woman responsible for ensuring Region 11 is represented at the YSF Silent Auction at International. This past year, our region’s gift to the auction was a musically themed table runner, made by Kathy.

Erin Lunn was our Strategic Planning Liaison, keeping the RMT focused and on task during our strategic planning meeting. It is my honor and privilege to work with these women.

I want to remind everyone that the RMT is always looking for “A Few Good Women” to fill the various committee jobs.  Please contact me for an application or to talk about all the wonderful opportunities Region 11 has for our members to become more involved at the region level. – Cathy
